2026 guide · AI search
AI search optimization best practices for 2026 (minus the hype)
AEO, GEO, LLMO… the acronyms multiply by the week. Here's the honest version: how AI tools decide what to say about your brand, and the practical steps that actually move the needle.
THE SHORT VERSION
Be the clearest, most trusted answer.
- Strong SEO comes first. AI tools lean on pages that already rank and earn trust.
- Write answer-first content that covers the follow-up questions AI asks behind the scenes.
- Build your reputation off-site, because AI pays close attention to what others say about you.
WHAT CHANGED
What changed in 2026
AI search went from "interesting experiment" to "part of every buyer journey" this year.
AI Mode passes 1B users
Google said AI Mode passed one billion monthly users within about a year, and showed a bigger search box that handles longer, more complex questions.

Ads arrive in ChatGPT
ChatGPT began showing sponsored placements to logged-in users on its free tiers in the US. Paid and organic AI visibility now go hand in hand.

More ads in AI Mode
Google expanded ads in AI Mode to more markets, so AI answers are now part of paid search planning too.

Clicks you can't see
Some AI-referred visits show up in analytics as "direct," and many AI answers influence buyers without a click at all. Measurement has to adapt.
BEST PRACTICES
What to do in 2026
If something is hype, we'll say so. These are the steps we use with clients.
01 · FOUNDATIONS
Start with strong SEO
There's no secret AI back door. AI tools pull heavily from pages that already rank well and from sources they trust, so classic SEO is still job one.
- Make sure AI crawlers can reach you. Check your robots.txt and decide on purpose which bots (like GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot) you allow.
- Fix technical basics like crawlability, speed and clean HTML that's easy to parse.
- Use structured data for your organization, products, people, FAQs and articles.
Our take: You'll hear a lot about llms.txt files. They're cheap to add, but there's no solid evidence yet that major AI tools rely on them. We'd file it under "nice to have."
02 · CONTENT
Map the questions AI asks
When someone asks an AI tool a question, it often runs several hidden searches behind the scenes (often called "fan-out"). Your content should answer those follow-ups too.
- List your priority buyer questions, then brainstorm the comparisons, "best" lists, costs and problems that sit behind them.
- Lead every section with a direct answer, then add proof: data, examples, pricing and specifics.
- Keep pages fresh. AI tools tend to favor recently updated information.
- Use clear headings and short paragraphs so it's easy for AI to quote you accurately.
03 · REPUTATION
Earn trust off your website
AI tools pay close attention to what others say about you: reviews, forums, news, industry lists and comparison sites. You can't fully control this, but you can influence it.
- Keep your brand facts consistent across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories.
- Get included in reputable "best of" lists and industry roundups through PR and partnerships.
- Encourage honest reviews on the platforms your buyers actually use.
- Turn your videos into answers with transcripts, chapters and answer-first intros (YouTube shows up a lot in AI answers).
04 · PAID + ORGANIC
Plan AI visibility together
Ads now appear in Google's AI experiences and in ChatGPT. Planning paid and organic AI visibility together keeps you from paying for clicks you'd earn anyway.
- Check where you already appear organically before buying AI placements.
- Use broad match, AI Max or Performance Max if you want Google Ads to be eligible in AI Mode.
- Watch brand terms closely so paid and organic aren't competing with each other.
05 · MEASUREMENT
Count what AI does
AI search is measurable, just not the same way as classic SEO. We track how AI sees you and what that produces.
- Create an AI referral channel in GA4 for traffic from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and others.
- Track a set of priority prompts monthly: Do you appear? Are you described accurately? Who else shows up?
- Watch branded search and direct traffic as signals that AI exposure is building awareness.
Our take: AI answers change from day to day, so look at trends over weeks, not single screenshots.

FAQ
AI search FAQs
Straight answers to the questions we hear most. Still curious? Just ask.
Is AEO different from GEO?
Not really. Answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) describe the same work: getting your brand found, cited and accurately described in AI-generated answers.
Which AI platforms matter most?
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Claude. Prioritize the ones your buyers actually use, based on your audience and analytics.
Can I pay to appear in AI answers?
In some places, yes. Google shows ads in its AI experiences, and ChatGPT now has sponsored placements. Organic citations are still earned through great content and a strong reputation.
How do I know if it's working?
Track your priority prompts over time, watch AI referral traffic in GA4, and look at branded search growth. Together they show whether AI is noticing you and sending people your way.
