Meta Ads best practices for 2026 (creative is the new targeting)
Facebook and Instagram ads changed a lot this year. Meta's AI now does more of the targeting, the placements and even some of the creative. Here's how to work with it, not against it.
THE SHORT VERSION
Great creative, clean data.
- Fix your data first: pixel plus Conversions API, with strong event match quality.
- Go broad and let creative do the targeting. Meta's AI groups similar ads, so variety matters.
- Review AI creative and placement defaults so your brand stays on message.
WHAT CHANGED
What changed in 2026
If Meta felt like it changed every week this year… it kind of did.
Terms update paused
Meta paused its planned November 20 ad terms update, including changes about AI-generated creative and website crawling. Its existing terms remain in effect.

Threads becomes a default placement
Threads became a default placement in campaigns, so your ads may show there unless you plan for it.

Creative Diversity scores
Meta began scoring creative diversity in Ads Manager. Visually similar ads get grouped together, so true variety matters more than ever.

BEST PRACTICES
What to do in 2026
Before we touch a bid or a budget, we check that conversions are tracked correctly. Automation is only as smart as the data you feed it, and bad data makes it confidently wrong.
01 · DATA
Pixel + Conversions API, done right
Meta's AI is only as good as the conversion signals it gets. Browser tracking alone misses a lot, so the Conversions API (CAPI) is a must.
- Run the Meta pixel and Conversions API together with proper deduplication.
- Check event match quality in Events Manager and pass hashed email and phone where you have consent.
- Optimize toward real outcomes, like purchases or qualified leads, not link clicks.
02 · CREATIVE
Creative is the targeting now
With broad targeting, your creative tells Meta who to show ads to. Ten versions of the same ad don't count as testing. Different angles do.
- Test genuinely different concepts: people vs. product, problem vs. outcome, video vs. static.
- Design for vertical first (Reels and Stories), with captions and your hook in the first second.
- Refresh creative regularly, before frequency climbs and results drop.
- Use your Creative Diversity score as a nudge to add real variety.
Our take: The best-performing "ad" is often a simple phone video of a real person explaining something useful. Polished isn't always better.
03 · STRUCTURE
Simplify your campaigns
Fewer, bigger campaigns give Meta's AI more data to learn from. Splitting budgets into dozens of tiny ad sets usually slows everything down.
- Use Advantage+ sales campaigns for ecommerce, and test them against your current setup.
- Go broad on targeting, and use exclusions only where they really matter (like existing customers).
- Use value rules to bid more for high-value audiences or less for placements like Threads, instead of excluding them.
04 · BRAND SAFETY
Check the AI defaults
Meta now edits text, generates headlines and turns on new features automatically. Some are great. Some aren't right for every brand, especially in regulated industries.
- Review Advantage+ creative enhancements at the ad level and turn off what doesn't fit.
- Add restricted words in your brand settings.
- Preview ads across placements before launch, including Threads.
Our take: The terms update is paused, not cancelled. Whatever Meta decides, review AI edits before they run. Your brand, your responsibility.
05 · MEASUREMENT
Judge Meta fairly
Meta reporting and GA4 rarely agree, and that's normal. Look at the bigger picture before you cut budget.
- Compare Meta results with GA4 and your CRM, and agree on one source of truth for decisions.
- Watch new-customer rates, not just total conversions.
- Run lift or holdout tests for bigger budgets to measure true impact.
