Google Ads best practices for 2026 from a Premier Partner
Google Ads got even more automated this year. AI Max, AI Mode ads, new Demand Gen rules… it's a lot. Here's how we're keeping campaigns profitable without handing Google the keys entirely.
THE SHORT VERSION
Feed the machine good data.
- Fix conversion tracking first. Smart Bidding optimizes toward whatever you tell it matters.
- Lean into AI Max and Performance Max, with guardrails like brand controls, URL rules and negatives.
- Review search terms and assets every week. Automation still needs a human with good judgment.
WHAT CHANGED
What changed in 2026
Here are the changes we think matter most for most advertisers.
AI Max upgrades begin
Google started automatically upgrading Search campaigns that use automatically created assets or campaign-level broad match to AI Max.

Dynamic Search Ads retire
Google moved the Dynamic Search Ads sunset and automatic upgrade to AI Max to February 2027. Upgrading early keeps you in control of the settings.

Consent controls change
Consent Mode settings in Google Ads became the single control for Google Ads cookies and IDs collected by the Google Analytics tag.

Ads in AI Mode expand
Google expanded ads in AI Mode to more markets. Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns using broad match or AI Max can be eligible.

BEST PRACTICES
What to do in 2026
Before we touch a bid or a budget, we check that conversions are tracked correctly. Automation is only as smart as the data you feed it, and bad data makes it confidently wrong.
01 · TRACKING
Get conversion tracking right
If your account counts page views or button clicks as conversions, Smart Bidding will happily get you more of them, whether or not they turn into customers.
- Use one or two primary conversions that reflect real business value, like qualified leads or purchases.
- Turn on enhanced conversions and check that Consent Mode is set up correctly.
- Import offline conversions from your CRM so bidding learns which leads actually close.
- Assign values where you can, even estimates, so Google knows a demo request beats a newsletter signup.
Our take: We see this in almost every audit. If Google Ads and GA4 never match, start with our post on why they never agree.
02 · SEARCH
Embrace AI Max, with guardrails
AI Max expands matching, customizes ad text and can send people to more relevant landing pages. It can find great new searches, and it can also wander.
- Test it with an experiment before switching everything over.
- Set brand inclusions or exclusions, URL rules and text guidelines so the AI stays on message.
- Review the search terms report weekly and add negatives for anything irrelevant.
- Keep exact and phrase keywords for your most important, proven searches.
03 · PERFORMANCE MAX
Give PMax better ingredients
Performance Max works best with great assets, clean data and clear goals. Think of it like cooking: the recipe is automated, but you still choose the ingredients.
- Build asset groups around themes (products, audiences or offers), not one giant catch-all.
- Add brand exclusions if you want PMax focused on new customers, and use account-level negatives.
- Upload real video. Otherwise Google may create or resize videos for you.
- Check channel and search term insights monthly to see where the money is going.
04 · DEMAND GEN + YOUTUBE
Build demand, then capture it
Demand Gen reaches people on YouTube, Discover and Gmail before they search. It's great for awareness and remarketing, but judge it on the right metrics.
- Use strong vertical and horizontal video with your message in the first few seconds.
- Measure lift in branded search and conversions, not just clicks.
- Watch for metric changes: Google updated how some view-through and engagement metrics are counted this year.
Our take: Display campaigns are moving into Demand Gen. If you still run Display, plan the switch on your own timeline.
05 · ROUTINE
Keep a human in the loop
Automation saves time, but it doesn't know your margins, your sales team or your busy season. A simple weekly routine keeps everything honest.
- Turn off or review auto-applied recommendations so nothing changes without your OK.
- Check budgets, search terms and assets weekly.
- Report monthly on leads, cost per lead and revenue, not just clicks and impressions.
QUICK CHECKLIST
Your 2026 checklist

FAQ
Google Ads FAQs
Straight answers to the questions we hear most. Still curious? Just ask.
What is AI Max in Google Ads?
AI Max is a set of AI features for Search campaigns: expanded search term matching, customized ad text and final URL expansion. It helps you reach relevant searches your keywords miss, with controls to keep it on track.
Should I still use keywords?
Yes. Keywords, especially exact and phrase match, are still the clearest signal for your most important searches. AI Max and broad match build on top of them.
What's a good ROI for Google Ads?
It depends on your margins and sales cycle, but a common starting target is around 4:1. We set targets with you based on what a lead or sale is actually worth.
Can my ads show in AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Yes. Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns can be eligible, especially with broad match or AI Max. Placement is automatic, so focus on strong assets and accurate conversion data.
